HeartStart
All S1 pupils undertake a single period each week of a variety of short courses, normally lasting eight weeks. One of these courses is HeartStart, offered by the Physical Education department.
 
HeartStart teaches the pupils what to do in an emergency situation, focusing on someone requiring basic CPR. Pupils will learn the basic skills required to increase the chance of someone surviving an emergency situation and the opportunity to practice these skills.
 
The sessions explored by HeartStart are:
-          The Chain of Survival
-          The conscious casualty
-          The unconscious casualty
-          Cardiac arrest
-          Choking
-          Suspected heart attack
-          Serious bleeding
 
A summary of the resuscitation procedure is:
Danger                                -              check for danger and approach with care
Response           -              check for response. Are they conscious?
Shout                   -              shout for help
 
Airway                 -              open their airway by tilting their head back
Breathing           -              check for normal breathing
CPR                       -              if they are not breathing, start basic CPR
