 Higher Physical Education

Higher Physical Education is an SQA qualification that is available to pupils in S4 – S6. The course involves both displaying practical ability and a knowledge and understanding that underpins performance, as well as evaluating and developing personal performance.

The Physical Education Higher course is intended to award those with the movement and technique skills to demonstrate effective performance in sporting activities and to enable pupils to analyse the factors affecting their performance in detail before designing and carrying out a training programme to improve their performance.

The course is designed to be practically-based but supplemented by some classroom learning.

The practical sessions should involve practical performance, performance analysis and performance development, with a reasonable proportion of available time given to each aspect.

The course consists of two main units, each of which must be achieved in order to pass the overall course. Assessment for each of the units will be internally assessed, most of which will consist of teacher observation of performance. The units are as follows:

1.       Performance Skills

2.       Factors Impacting on Performance

A minimum of two activities must be undertaken by pupils for their performance assessments. The activities that will be undertaken in the course are as follows:

·         Basketball

·         Football

·         Badminton

·         Swimming

One activity will be used to investigate Factors Impacting on Performance. This will be:

1.       Basketball

Assessment

If the two course units have been passed then pupils can be presented for assessment. Assessment consists of two sections:

1.       A practical performance on one activity, being graded from A-D, with marks out of 60 being given.

2.       A written exam, testing pupils knowledge of the factors impacting upon performance and how they are analysed and developed. The written exam is marked out of 40.
