National 4 Physical Education

National 4 Physical Education is an SQA qualification that is available to pupils in S4 – S6. The course involves both displaying practical ability and a knowledge and understanding that underpins performance, as well as evaluating and developing personal performance.
The course is intended to award those with the movement and technique skills to demonstrate effective performance in sporting activities and to enable pupils to analysis the factors affecting their performance before designing and carrying out a training programme to improve their performance. The added value unit aims to encourage and develop pupils sporting etiquette and physical and mental preparation for sporting performance.
The course is designed to be practically-based but supplemented by some classroom learning.
The practical sessions should involve practical performance, performance analysis, performance development and sportsmanship and etiquette, with a reasonable proportion of available time given to each aspect.
 
The course consists of three units, each of which must be achieved in order to pass the overall course. Assessment for each of the units will be internally assessed, most of which will consist of teacher observation of performance. The units are as follows:
 
  1. Performance Skills
  2. Factors Impacting on Performance
  3. Added Value Unit
 
The course will be undertaken with the provision of five periods per week. The five periods will be allocated as follows:
 
Performance Skills:        1 period, practical-based
 
Factors Impacting On Performance:        3 periods:            2 practical-based
                                                                                                                1 classroom learning
 
Added Value Unit:          1 period, practical-based
 
A minimum of two activities must be undertaken by pupils for their performance assessments. The activities that will be undertaken in the course are as follows:
·         Basketball
·         Football
·         Badminton
·         Swimming
 
 
One activity will be used to investigate Factors Impacting on Performance. This will be:
