Health Promoting School

Health and education go hand in hand and young people who are fit and healthy are more likely to do better at school.

All establishments within the Saint Rochs Learning Community are working towards the status of health promoting school. This is a Scottish Government initiative, in relation to the important role that schools play in health improvement. The Scottish Government requires that every school and nursery in Scotland to be a Health Promoting School.

This broad definition of a health promoting school was set out by the World Health Organisation in 1995 and is still relevant today:

“A health promoting school is one in which all members of the school community work together to provide pupils with integrated and positive experiences and structures, which promote and protect their health. This includes both the formal and informal curriculum in health, the creation of a safe and healthy school environment, the provision of appropriate health services and the involvement of the family and wider community in efforts to promote health.”

Saint Rochs Learning Community has a team dedicated to health promotion issues and developments and always seeks to involve other key members of the school community. The team are:

Active Schools Co-ordinator - Neil Fowler
School Nurse
Mrs Park - Health Education Co-ordinator (Secondary)
