Department aims and course outline: Teach every pupil in the school to appreciate the importance of languages in a global context.
- Encourage pupils to use the foreign language as often as possible.
- Approach the teaching of languages in a manner which is enjoyable and effective.
- Create an atmosphere which is open, cultural and interesting.
- Help all pupils to achieve their full potential.
Courses Taught
BGE
- S1 receive 3 periods of French per week and do a 4 week block of Spanish in June
- S2 receive 3 periods of French per week and do an 8 week block of Spanish in January-February
- S3 receive 4 periods of French/Spanish per week.
SENIOR PHASE
French and Spanish is offered at National 4, National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher level.
Italian is offered at National 4, National 5 and Higher level.
The Interdisciplinary Project is also available for pupils in the Senior Phase. It is part of the Scottish Baccalaureate and has been designed to provide a challenging and rewarding experience for candidates in fifth and sixth year of secondary school.
Homework Requirements
Modern Languages pupils are issued with regular homework to consolidate the work undertaken in class. Homework can take a variety of forms and might include written exercises; completion of class work; revision of vocabulary and grammar notes.
